why would the soundgear 400 series have active pickups and the 900 not? or at least I was told the 400 has active...

I believe it does. The 300 has active, I have an SR300. But, I could not tell you why the 900 doesn't have active pickups....

yea it is strange. My 505 has active as well. I will not ever own another passive pickup bass, just not a fan at all

Yeah, he does know what he's talking about. I know a lot of people that don't like the sound. They insist that it doesn't give bass playing a "rounded" sound. But whatever, It's opinion... I like both active and passive, I test played both of those basses and they both sounded really smooth to me. I like both of the basses, but I can't decide which one to get. The only thing that's swaying me toward the 900 is it's $300 cheaper than the MDB01 lol...

not only are active pickups louder but they reduce the noise.
Active vs. Passive is like night and day, if you dont believe me try and find a bass that let's you switch it on and off.
And the extra $300 is for the name

I know about the difference between the two. I already have a bass with Active Pickups, and I'm preparing to buy one with Passive. If I didn't like the sound, then I wouldn't even consider buying one. And, I know where the extra 300 is from lol, but that bass is just so bad ass! lol

help yourself then. Noisy and quiet are 2 qualities I dont want in a bass, but maybe thats just me.
And all signature instruments are simply overpriced for no reason other than the signature design. Half the time the artist doesnt even use that specific model anyway

Yeah true..but whatever! Alot of great albums have been made with basses with PAssive pickups. Mike D's basses all have humbucker and Killswitch Engage makes some bad ass albums. Jim uses basses with humbuckers to record most Chimaira albums. All that I'm saying is that the sound is used to make some really good albums. If It's mistake, i'll know right away..

you gotta also realize its not just a bass, and an amp getting the sound gets in the studio to record these albums. Its put thru a ton of shit before it reaches the cd; a ton of shit that the average Joe doesnt have
You cant judge the quality of an instrument based on the album it produced. With Pro Tools, Amp Modelers and all the other digital shit out there right now you can take a piece of shit and make it sound like almost anything you want it to

but the bands who do that are the bands who don't sound as good live, i personally prefer a raw sound in a mix

not true, anything you can do in a studio, you can take on the road and use live
there are bands out there with full pro tools rigs behind the curtain when they play. Bands, not just pop acts like it used to be

yeah but if you need a shit load of studio effects to make your band sound decent...then your band need to re-approach your writing process

you'd be surprised just how many bands have tons of shit you dont see live. I'm sure alot of them are on your list of favorites and ones you thought would never do such

Whatever man. It's a choice between sounds. I was in the shop yesterday trying out different basses. Ones iwth active and passive pickups. I like both of the sounds, and I have great amps and other equipment to make my shit sound good. If i have problems, i will just have to do some tweaking.

the shit I was talking about it being run thru for an album is hardly "great amps" but tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment
